Wanting a break does not mean loving your child less. Respite care is planned, temporary support that gives a family caregiver time to rest, attend appointments, work, spend time with other family members, or recover capacity.

Define what kind of break would help

Respite may happen in the home or another setting and may be occasional or scheduled. Programs, funding, and eligibility differ by location. Start by naming the situation: a weekly two-hour break, help during an appointment, after-school coverage, or overnight support.

  • When and how often care is needed
  • Whether care must be in-home
  • Transportation or mobility support
  • Medical or behavioral support needs
  • Languages and communication methods

Where to ask

Contact your state developmental disability agency, Medicaid waiver office, local family support organization, school social worker, or health care team. Parent Training and Information Centers may also help families locate state-specific systems.

Create a short care and safety profile

  • How your child communicates yes, no, pain, and help
  • Medications, allergies, seizures, or feeding needs
  • Elopement, falls, or other safety risks
  • Early signs of distress or sensory overload
  • Comforting routines and preferred activities
  • Emergency contacts and consent information

Use some of the time for recovery

Respite can easily become time for errands only. When possible, protect at least part of it for sleep, health care, movement, connection, or quiet. Rest is preventive care for the whole family system.

Frequently asked question

Is respite care only for emergencies?

No. Respite can be planned and recurring. Availability, eligibility, and funding vary by community and program.
